Jamaica is in the Northern and Western hemisphere. Jamaica is in the West Indies it is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. The capital of Jamaica is Kingston. Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean. In 1962, Jamaica was the first Caribbean country to gain independence from the United Kingdom. The Jamaican flag is the only flag in the world, that doesn't share any of the colors of the American flag. The most common greeting in Jamaica is a firm handshake accompanied by a direct eye contact and a genuinely warm smile, women will hug and kiss on each cheek starting from the right. In Jamaica English is the official language, but a large amount of the Jamaican people speaks of English Creole, known by linguists as Jamaican Creole or Patois. Jamaica is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth 11 as head of state. The country is a parliamentary democracy with a bicameral legislator and party system. The island of Jamaica has one of the highest numbers in churches per capita in the world. Jamaica was the first Caribbean country to have gain independence. However, it was also the first the country in the Western World to build a railroad just 18 years after the British built theirs. Jamaica has the second largest butterfly in the world called the (The Giant Swallowtail). Jamaica produces Blue Mountain Coffee, which is a highly sought after and expensive coffee that is popular across the globe. Today Jamaica is famous for cultivating sugar cane, bananas, and mangoes, none of which are indigenous. Jamaica is home the of the fastest man in the world Usain Bolt and is also home to the famous Bob Marley. Despite the many hardships faced by Jamaicans, in general, they are a laid-back people. The popular phrase, “No Problem Mon,” or some variation thereof is an accurate summary of the Jamaican attitude.
