Blog Post #4

My research topic is about the History of Jamaica Art. The question that I am trying to get answers to is How does the art represent each culture in Jamaica? Jamaica has many different cultures that have established how Jamaica is today. This culture has helped create art in Jamaica some are African- Americans, Indigenous, Arawak and Tanio, Spanish and English colonist. These cultures created art that has been around for centuries and is still being used today to keep that art around this day. The reason why I chose art as my topic is that I love all different kind of art and how it is created in various ways to make unique things.
In addition, I have been to Jamaica and seen various art creations made from different resources like bamboo, clay, and wood. One thing I always wondered is how they made those unique creations. Some art creations are “Zemi figures,” carved stones, portraits, sculptures, jewelry, and instruments. One challenge that I have faced when researching my topic is that there are a lot of articles that do not have the information I need about my topic. So I have to narrow down and define it, so I can get the right information that will help me with my research. However, some interesting facts that I have learned about my topic are Kingston is rich in art, music, and museums. The National Gallery, which houses some of the finest collection of Caribbean art, to the Bob Marley Museum, the concerted the former home of the father of reggae music. Another interesting fact is that Jamaican art is grouped within non-Western Art tradition and exists underneath the umbrella of  Latin American Art. Many of the Caribbean islands, Jamaica is a popular tourist destination. However, Jamaican art provides a window into the often turbulent history of the country that a lot of tourists do not see.
Furthermore, I  still have more research to do to make my research paper better. Some questions in particular that I will be looking up are. The first question is What was the first art school in Jamaica/Caribbean? The second one is What art tradition was the main tradition? The third question is What art museum was the first created in Jamaica? The last question is what artists have contributed greatly to art history in Jamaica? These question will help with my research because it will help create more of a better research paper and create a better establish paper. In conclusion, Jamaican art has unique atmosphere incorporated in its culture and nature created from many artists through music, dance film, theater, and visual artwork.

Image result for similarity and difference cartoon drawingsIn the book “ Green Cane and Juicy Flotsam” there are two stories that I will be discussing from the book. The first story is ‘Little Cog-burt,’ and the second one is ‘Cotton Candy.’ I will be conversing about the similarities and differences between the two tales.  These stories all have significant meaning and background to them that show a different aspect of life. However, each story has been passed down from generation to generation which makes these stories unique in there own way, but they also have a similar relations to each other. With this in mind, there are a few similarities between ‘Little Cog-burt,’ and ‘Cotton Candy.’ The first similarity is that the author of the stories is that they are both women, and they both write novels. The second similarity is that the stories both follow after traditions in the story ‘Little Cog-burt’ the mother, Moira cuts her hair every Christmas to make a fairy doll for the tree.  In particular, in the story, it states “In England, the same thing happened every year. Moria says  “ Cut off a few inches of my hair” (page 6).

Similarly, for the story ‘Cotton Candy’ the tradition is that Lola's mother was strict with her just like her grandparents were with Lola's mother. In particular, the story mentions that  “ The monotonous years, for her repetitions of frustrationsons renewed desires, killed her grandparents and uncles, and forced her relatives to emigrate” (page 14). Also, this shows that all of her ancestors had to suffer, and she has to, too because her mother is following traditions, but Lola does not want to continue on the same path. The third similarity is that in both stories the authors use nature. For example, in the story ‘ Little Cog-burt’ the author uses poinsettia trees as a form of nature. However, in the story ‘Cotton Candy’ the author uses cubalibre branches to relate to nature. Additionally, another similarity between the story is that they both have mothers and families in the stories.

In addition, the stories ‘Little Cog-burt, and ‘Cotton Candy’ has some differences. One difference is that the author tells in the story ‘Little Cog-burt’ the mother Moria she has children who were at boarding school and couldn’t come home for Christmas. On the other in the story ‘ Cotton Candy’ Lola's mother was a strict mother who never let her do anything she wanted and was over barring Lola. A second difference is that both of the stories are written in different countries from different people. The story about ‘Little Cog-burt is written in Dominica and the story about ‘Cotton Candy’ is written in Cuba.

Image result for devil as a man and a girl cartoon     In “Tetiyette and the Devil” tale from Guadeloupe from a book called “Green Cane and Juicy Flotsam,” recorders Ina Cesaire, and Joelle Laurent attempt to convey a message using ethos, text, poetry, and figurative language to portray to an intended audience. The message is a short story about a mother who had just only one girl child who she was trying to marry off to a goat or a pig the to whom the girl wish to choose. When finally the picky daughter chose a pig to marry they got married as soon as possible, and the mother was concerned about the pig her child chose. The mother then insisted that her daughter should poke her husband to check to see if he either oozed out blood or slime. Therefore, if he oozed slime he was the devil, the daughter did what her mother wanted. However, when she poked him he oozed slime she, so she then poked herself and saw that she was flowing blood. So she then wipes her blood with a cloth and takes it to show her mother the mother is then satisfied that he wasn’t a devil. That night the husband started to eat up her up, and everyone was asleep and too far from where they were sleeping. The daughter yelled and called out to her mother-in-law, father, mother, and brother. When finally her brother got up to help his sister who was almost swallowed whole till he came in with a sharp knife and slit the devil's throat. The author conveys its message by using figurative language. One way is by personification. For instance, the author states “The following day a pig went walking by, came in: Good Morning, Madame. The pig asked if he could see her daughter” (Cesaire 1). In particular, this means that the author is referring to the pig as a man. The author uses the word to engage an audience and to show that the men ‘pigs’ were trying to find, and were begging and asking to see the daughter. In the story “Tetiyette and the Devil,” the author purpose was to inform its intended reader that everything that glitters is not gold. For example, in the story, it states that there was a “ devil roaming around and he wanted the girl to marry him. So he decked himself in gold. He wore all the gold he owned. He wore the best suit” (Cesaire 2). However, this means that even if they dress up on the outside to make themselves look good or act nice does not mean that they are and you have to learn who they are on the inside.

The author purposes are to tell readers their story and to inform, and teach the reader about situations that happen in life. On the other hand, the author also tries to connect to the intended audience using ethos to appeal to readers. For instance, the author states “But a devil was roaming the neighborhood” (Cesaire 2).  To clarify, this shows an intended audience that there is a religiously related comparison in the message and enhances the message to evoke emotion and establish a mood. The author-audience in the message is for adults, but could also be anyone. However, specifically, it's for older women or teen girls that have maybe experience this type of situation. Also, this story should teach everyone that even if a person seems nice, you truly do not know who they are until their true color shows. This short story had a relation to me when the author stated “ The little brother said: Oh no! Oh no! She’s my sister, she’s my only sister, and she’s being eaten up” (Cesaire 4).  I related because I have a younger brother who always helps me in some situations and will do anything because I'm the only sibling he has.

About Me

Hi, my name is Charissa Pittman. I have one younger sibling. I was born in North Carolina and grew up in Chicago and then moved to Georgia when I around three or four.  I am a college student majoring in Criminal Justice.  I am currently working on my bachelor's degree with plans to continue working towards my P.H.D. When I am finished I my future plan is to work as an F.B.I or as a C.S.I.  favorite shows are criminal shows like Criminal Minds or First 48, or anything related to things that you have to do with an investigation. When I'm not going to school and when I have a long break I am traveling I have been to almost every state on the East coast. I love traveling and seeing all the different things and cultures and learning about the people and how different they live from where I live at. When you travel you see that everything is not the same and see all the beautiful different things in the world. I have also been out of the country two times. The first time was on was a cruise ship and it to Jamaica, Bahamas, and Cayman Island, and the second time was to Ecuador (The Middle of World). One of my future goals is to travel all 50 states and all 7 continents. Another one of my future goals is to become an actress. However, when I am not traveling one thing I love doing is shopping rather it's online, or at the mall. I also like taking pictures mostly when I'm traveling, but also when I'm home. Because if you never took a picture it never happens, and plus pictures last forever. My favorite thing to do is listen to music it doesn't matter what kind of music I like all genres and dance.
