In “Tetiyette and the Devil” tale from Guadeloupe from a book called “Green Cane and Juicy Flotsam,” recorders Ina Cesaire, and Joelle Laurent attempt to convey a message using ethos, text, poetry, and figurative language to portray to an intended audience. The message is a short story about a mother who had just only one girl child who she was trying to marry off to a goat or a pig the to whom the girl wish to choose. When finally the picky daughter chose a pig to marry they got married as soon as possible, and the mother was concerned about the pig her child chose. The mother then insisted that her daughter should poke her husband to check to see if he either oozed out blood or slime. Therefore, if he oozed slime he was the devil, the daughter did what her mother wanted. However, when she poked him he oozed slime she, so she then poked herself and saw that she was flowing blood. So she then wipes her blood with a cloth and takes it to show her mother the mother is then satisfied that he wasn’t a devil. That night the husband started to eat up her up, and everyone was asleep and too far from where they were sleeping. The daughter yelled and called out to her mother-in-law, father, mother, and brother. When finally her brother got up to help his sister who was almost swallowed whole till he came in with a sharp knife and slit the devil's throat. The author conveys its message by using figurative language. One way is by personification. For instance, the author states “The following day a pig went walking by, came in: Good Morning, Madame. The pig asked if he could see her daughter” (Cesaire 1). In particular, this means that the author is referring to the pig as a man. The author uses the word to engage an audience and to show that the men ‘pigs’ were trying to find, and were begging and asking to see the daughter. In the story “Tetiyette and the Devil,” the author purpose was to inform its intended reader that everything that glitters is not gold. For example, in the story, it states that there was a “ devil roaming around and he wanted the girl to marry him. So he decked himself in gold. He wore all the gold he owned. He wore the best suit” (Cesaire 2). However, this means that even if they dress up on the outside to make themselves look good or act nice does not mean that they are and you have to learn who they are on the inside. The author purposes are to tell readers their story and to inform, and teach the reader about situations that happen in life. On the other hand, the author also tries to connect to the intended audience using ethos to appeal to readers. For instance, the author states “But a devil was roaming the neighborhood” (Cesaire 2). To clarify, this shows an intended audience that there is a religiously related comparison in the message and enhances the message to evoke emotion and establish a mood. The author-audience in the message is for adults, but could also be anyone. However, specifically, it's for older women or teen girls that have maybe experience this type of situation. Also, this story should teach everyone that even if a person seems nice, you truly do not know who they are until their true color shows. This short story had a relation to me when the author stated “ The little brother said: Oh no! Oh no! She’s my sister, she’s my only sister, and she’s being eaten up” (Cesaire 4). I related because I have a younger brother who always helps me in some situations and will do anything because I'm the only sibling he has.
