Blog Post #4

My research topic is about the History of Jamaica Art. The question that I am trying to get answers to is How does the art represent each culture in Jamaica? Jamaica has many different cultures that have established how Jamaica is today. This culture has helped create art in Jamaica some are African- Americans, Indigenous, Arawak and Tanio, Spanish and English colonist. These cultures created art that has been around for centuries and is still being used today to keep that art around this day. The reason why I chose art as my topic is that I love all different kind of art and how it is created in various ways to make unique things.
In addition, I have been to Jamaica and seen various art creations made from different resources like bamboo, clay, and wood. One thing I always wondered is how they made those unique creations. Some art creations are “Zemi figures,” carved stones, portraits, sculptures, jewelry, and instruments. One challenge that I have faced when researching my topic is that there are a lot of articles that do not have the information I need about my topic. So I have to narrow down and define it, so I can get the right information that will help me with my research. However, some interesting facts that I have learned about my topic are Kingston is rich in art, music, and museums. The National Gallery, which houses some of the finest collection of Caribbean art, to the Bob Marley Museum, the concerted the former home of the father of reggae music. Another interesting fact is that Jamaican art is grouped within non-Western Art tradition and exists underneath the umbrella of  Latin American Art. Many of the Caribbean islands, Jamaica is a popular tourist destination. However, Jamaican art provides a window into the often turbulent history of the country that a lot of tourists do not see.
Furthermore, I  still have more research to do to make my research paper better. Some questions in particular that I will be looking up are. The first question is What was the first art school in Jamaica/Caribbean? The second one is What art tradition was the main tradition? The third question is What art museum was the first created in Jamaica? The last question is what artists have contributed greatly to art history in Jamaica? These question will help with my research because it will help create more of a better research paper and create a better establish paper. In conclusion, Jamaican art has unique atmosphere incorporated in its culture and nature created from many artists through music, dance film, theater, and visual artwork.
